Dragon Age: Dreadwolf production director Mac Walters leaves BioWare

Industry veteran Walters was with BioWare for nearly two decades.

Mac Walters has stepped away from BioWare. After 19 years and various roles across the developer’s most famous (and some infamous) projects, Walters is leaving the studio to pursue new adventures.

He broke the news on LinkedIn this morning, writing, “[A]t the end of last year I decided to leave BioWare. These past 19 years have been a life-changing experience to say the least, and it made the choice to go very difficult.” He ended the post giving thanks to his colleagues at BioWare, and said, “I wish everyone at BioWare the very best in everything you do. It’s truly been a pleasure.”

Walter started out as a writer on Jade Empire before becoming a senior writer on the first Mass Effect and lead writer on its sequels. He then moved into directorial roles, becoming the narrative direction for Anthem, creative director on Mass Effect Andromeda, project director on Mass Effect Legendary Edition, and lastly the production director on the in-development Dragon Age Dreadwolf.

“[N]ew adventures” are in store for Walters as he lists “personal goal pursuit” as his current position on LinkedIn. Whether that’s going indie, joining a different Triple A studio, or taking a step away from games entirely, only time will tell.

As for BioWare? The studio is currently working on sequels to its two most famous IPs, Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Neither game has a release window yet as of this writing.
