Last year was a fantastic year for video games, with releases like Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarök collecting award after award. 2023 looks to continue the trend of releasing excellent games week after week, and even the doldrums of January will see some day-one purchases come out.
Let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this month.
Season: A Letter to the Future (1/31)
Season: A Letter to the Future looks to be the year’s next big indie hit. It has a wonderfully intriguing premise: you play as a young woman leaving her secluded village for the first time. She travels around the world by bike in an attempt to document, its people, places, and cultures before a cataclysmic event ends everything. The PS5 boasts exclusive features that’ll really make the game stand out: adaptive triggers for pedaling, haptic feedback that changes depending on the terrain, and near-instant loading times. In addition to the PS4 and PS5, Season will be available on PC, making it a perfect Steam Deck game.
Trek to Yomi (1/30)
After a surprise announcement last week, Trek to Yomi arrived on Switch yesterday. You’ll take control of a young swordsman who must defend his village and himself from threats both living and demonic. Combat is intense and challenging, but the real draw of Yomi is the aesthetic, music, and voice acting that combine to immerse the player in what is akin to a playable samurai film. Aspiring sword fighters won’t want to miss it.
Deliver Us Mars (2/2)
Indies rule this week as Deliver Us Mars rounds out a great first month to 2023. The atmospheric narrative-driven game will take players to our red neighbor to rescue stolen colony ships and preserve the human race. Astronaut-in-training and protagonist Kathy Johanson also searches for her father, once thought dead but who may actually be alive. Gameplay focuses on platforming, puzzle solving, and traversing Mars in vehicles.
