How ‘Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey’ can become the next low budget horror sensation

Another indie horror hit?

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey has received plenty of attention since it was first announced. The online curiosity turned into genuine interest as people realized the popular children’s story was truly getting made into a horror movie. Before long, what was originally meant to be a streaming release was being scheduled for one night only theater showings. This has since been expanded to a longer theatrical run.

If the movie is ever going to be the low budget horror sensation, it is going to have to continue the strong word of mouth that generated so much interest to begin with. This means leaning into the more outrageous aspects of the story. It is not enough to have Pooh and his friends from the Hundred Acre Wood murder people. The deaths have to stand out and be uncomfortable. Based on early reports, its sounds like there is plenty of disturbing imagery in Blood and Honey.

There are plenty of slashers with impressive kills, however. For Blood and Honey to truly stand out and be the first step in the twisted childhood universe writer/director Rhys Frake-Waterfield is planning, there has to be strong characters. All of the best horror franchises have survived due to their great villains. There’s a reason there are so many Halloween movies but just one Slender Man feature.

Perhaps most importantly, the odd film must avoid becoming too much of a spoof. Everyone loves a good comedy-horror, but this is one of those situations where the jokes should be kept to a minimum. The fact that this movie even exists is funny in itself, and the creative team struck gold with the title. Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey should focus on being the nightmare fuel it can be. By ruining all of our childhood’s it will become one of the biggest horror movies of this year.
