What ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ can do to be great

So how can James Gunn knock it out of the park with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’?

With James Gunn’s third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy around the corner, it’s only fair to talk about and reminisce about the greatness of James Gunn’s films and how Gunn can make the third and final film truly marvelous.

To bring everyone to date, the series began in 2014 with a rag-tag group of misfits that ended up becoming good friends. The 2017 sequel saw them battle Peter Quill’s dad, Ego and this third entry will see Adam Warlock face off against the Guardians. Lord only knows what we can expect this coming May.

We need to come to full circle

What 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' can do to be great

First and foremost, the series for this family unit needs to come full circle. Fans are going to want to see Quill (Chris Pratt) have a fitting ending. Moreover, people are getting more of a backstory when it comes to the wisecracking raccoon named Rocket, which should only bolster his possible farewell from the MCU.

More than anything, they are going to want to see Drax have a perfect ending, since actor Dave Bautista has said that he is done playing the character. The character would have to possibly make the ultimate sacrifice in homage to his wife and child who were killed by Ronan the Accuser at the behest of Thanos.

Either way, it seems very certain that not everyone is going to make the cut after the climax of the film.

Gamora and Quill must fall back in love

What 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' can do to be great

After Thanos threw Gamora over a cliff to obtain the soul stone in Infinity War, it wasn’t until the following film, Endgame, that we saw her again. But this iteration of the character was from 2014 and had no recollection of Quill or any of the other Guardians of the Galaxy.

As a result, her feelings for Quill are now non-existent and he must try to rekindle the old love that he and his former flame once shared, which will be like watching 2012’s The Vow, but I’m sure Gunn’s talent behind the camera is able to make this reunion/departure film something very memorable for the fans.

Nebula must be the next leader

What 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' can do to be great

Whatever characters are left after the end of this movie, it seems obvious that the next leader of the following faction of the Guardians of the Galaxy will be Nebula. After being the least desired child of her father Thanos, she has been bullied, derided and discarded by many and it seems that the best arc for her would be to finally be the leader of the team of misfits.

Quill has lost a lot. His mother died, Yondu sacrificed himself trying to save him and his father Ego may have been the source of all of his suffering. However, given that Nebula seems like a similar character to have everything taken from her and she seems like the perfect runner-up as leader.

Only time will tell what the future will hold for these characters in Gunn’s acclaimed trilogy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes to theaters May 5
