After whispers about it were reported earlier this year, Netherrealm officially announced Mortal Kombat 1 today with a new trailer in all its bloody glory.
It follows the events of Mortal Kombat 11 and its Aftermath expansion by effectively reboots the series. “Discover a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe created by the Fire God Liu Kang,” the official website reads. “Mortal Kombat 1 ushers in a new era of the iconic franchise with a new fighting system, game modes, and fatalities!” Liu Kang will joined by series standouts Scorpion, Sub Zero, Kitana, Kung Lao, and more. The main roster will be assisted by Kameo Fighters, a separate group of characters who can be called upon in battle to aide.
The new game will return the series’ trademark gore, and the announcement trailer ends with a particularly awesome fatality, of which I’m sure there will be plenty. Except deep gameplay mechanics, new and returning faces, and a compelling story, something the series has staked its claim on with the past few entries.
Aside from the base edition, a $109.99 Premium Edition will offer players early access on September 14, a Jean-Claude Van Damme skin for Johnny Cage, in-game currency in the form of 1250 Dragon Krystals, five new Kameo Fighters, and early access to six fighters. For only the PS and Xbox Series X/S editions, the Kollector’s Edition will run you $249.99. It includes everything listed above as well as 1450 more Dragon Krystals, a steel case, art prints, and a Liu Kang Sculpture.
Mortal Kombat 1 releases September 19, 2023 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. Pre-order now to get Shang Tsung as a playable character and to receive beta access in August.
