Boots Riley first came upon people’s radar with the absurdist dark comedy film Sorry to Bother You. In his latest project, I’m a Virgo, he captures the same originality, surreal humor, and social commentary. Attendees at this year’s SXSW had the first chance to watch the series, and now the world can catch it when the entire first season drops on Prime Video this June 23. Recently, the streaming platform released the official trailer and key art (see above) to the upcoming mythical coming-of-age story.
I’m a Virgo follows a young black man named Cootie who lives in Oakland, California, Because he is 13-foot-tall, he lived a sheltered life immersed in comic books and television. One day, he decides to escape his home to experience the real world. Cootie meets new friends, finds love, and encounters one of his idols, the superhero appropriately named, The Hero.
Riley directs all seven episodes which stars Emmy-winning actor Jharrel Jerome (When They See Us, Moonlight) as Cootie. The rest of the cast includes Brett Gray (On My Block, Star Trek: Prodigy), Kara Young (The Punisher), Allius Barnes (PEN15), Olivia Washington (Breaking), Mike Epps (The Upshaws, Dolemite Is My Name), Carmen Ejogo (True Detective, Fantastic Beasts), and Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight, The Righteous Gemstones).
Behind the scenes, Riley and Tze Chun (Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai) are the I’m a Virgo’s co-showrunners. They serve as executive producers, alongside Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer for Media Res Studio (Pachinko, The Morning Show), Jerome, and Rebecca Rivo.
