Daredevil #13 will have you questioning what you see. Not only that, but you’ll also feel for Matt Murdock as he undergoes even more testing of his faith. Chip Zdarsky, Marco Checchetto, and Matthew Wilson join again to take Matt deeper into the afterlife after killing him last issue. Get ready to experience the Beast’s realm and learn who is behind the Fist. Will these experiences and answers help or hinder Matt?
From our preview, you can see that the setting is very vivid. The interior pages are where Marco Checchetto and Matthew Wilson get to unleash their abilities. I will miss these two on Daredevil’s adventures, but I will ensure I savor this and the next issue before they are gone. Their depiction of Hell, or the Beast’s version, is a striking arena for this issue’s clash to happen. I like that Checchetto and Wilson give us a visual of the Beast, and he is still as gross as the last time we saw him. The art team makes the Beast look like a vile monstrosity and works very nicely with their representation of the demon associated with the Book of the Fist.
When you see their version of the demon connected to the Book of the Fist, make sure you aren’t having a meal while reading this comic. I like that Checchetto has made the new demon look like a cancerous growth, just sprawling everywhere and not something you want touching you. Wilson’s colors help to give a gross vibe to the demon that helps make it look sickening. Their design works to amplify the consequences of Matt Murdock’s choices, as this new demon looks like it has clung to Matt’s soul and is part of the process that has brought Matt to Hell. The art and story unite in these scenes in Hell to solidify their connection with Matt’s doubts and the demon he has been working with.
As for Chip Zdarsky’s script, there is a continuation of deep cuts. For a moment, I was apprehensive about the souls that Matt Murdock encounters at the start, but I like the twist Zdarsky places in the story. It feels very Twilight Zone, but it works to bring those emotions up in Matt as he navigates his way. This portion of the story lifts Matt’s faith, which was refreshing to read after Matt succumbed to negative thoughts and consequences. For those enjoying the new “white, Hell fighting” suit, you’ll enjoy how it gets displayed here and reflects Matt’s better state of mind.
Daredevil #13 is a very personal issue that dives into Matt Murdock’s current battle, which helps to evoke why Daredevil is a great character to follow. His battles are of all natures, but when they go internal or spiritual, they play to the character’s strength. This issue rises to the top of Daredevil feats but doesn’t give us a clear-cut ending, which is fine as the next issue is the conclusion to the creative team’s run. I hope they can give us a solid ending that helps keep this run compelling.
