The biggest new video games releasing the week of 8/14/23

Check out what’s new in the world of video games this week.

The Summer of Gaming gave us plenty of excellent video games to look forward to this year and next, but let’s not forget about the games you’ll be playing sooner rather than later. While The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has drawn most everyone’s attention this year, this summer still has plenty of exciting new releases to play and fall in love with.

Let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this week.

Red Dead Redemption (8/17)

Platforms: PlayStation 4, Switch

Last week, Rockstar announced not a Red Dead Redemption remake or even an upscaled remaster, but rather an RDR port to the PS4 and Switch. At $50, the port of the thirteen-year-old game received swift backlash from the gaming community as players were left both frustrated the release was a port as opposed to a remake and flabbergasted at the price. The port will also include Undead Nightmare, an adventure set in an alternate reality in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.

Books of Hours (8/17)

Platform: PC

Book of Hours transports players to a decaying occult library in the 1930s. There, they will be tasked with building a library full of grimoire, aiding people who have come for your help, and investigate the cause of the Hush House fire. Described as a “narrative crafting RPG,” Book of Hours will let players decide what kind of occult librarian they want to be.

Madden NFL 24 (8/18)

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S

Another year, same ol’ MaddenMadden NFL 24 will features minor gameplay tweaks and additions, like Skill-Based Passing 2.0, making for a more authentic passing game, and Hit Everything 2.0, which improves AI tackling. The newest iteration reintroduces Superstar Mode where you can take your created player from the Combine all the way to the Hall of Fame. As a long-awaited step in the right direction, Madden NFL 24 will support cross-play for current-gen consoles and PC. That’s right — the PC version is finally in step with the newest consoles as opposed to being just a port of the PS4/Xbox One version.
