‘Captain Marvel: Assault on Eden’ #1 shows Carol doing what she does best

A tight one-shot over coffee.

Currently between ongoing solo series, Captain Marvel finds herself on Throneworld II to celebrate one year since the unification of the once-warring Kree and Skrull empires. She gets to have a quick adventure with her fellow Kree hybrid friend Hukling and his very powerful husband Wiccan between moments of introspection and sips of coffee.

This celebration is called ‘Unification Day’ and the citizenry gathers to celebrate with their leader Emperor Hulkling, but an old sinister force returns and begins to kidnap children, a most egregious party fowl.

This turns out to be the Supreme Intelligence, back doing its whole pursuit of perfection through genocide thing. The Supreme Intelligence may be a computer but its style of communication is far from robotic. Its fanatical reverence for the Kree is expressed in manic prose with its attention directed by a menagerie of bulging eyeballs displayed on giant screens. This works incredibly well for the faceless entity and allows for beautifully formatted pages of action and dialogue.

Anthony Oliveira is such a thoughtful writer and he continues to show that in this issue. Carol, Billy, and Teddy each get a chance to shine and he clearly understands these characters well. Despite the limited room to tell a full story, we get jokes, action, and quiet moments of reflection. Especially from Carol as we get glimpses of her childhood and her thoughts on her current life.

Even when standing still, Elenora Carlini gives Carol’s big beautiful blonde hair dynamic movement. It seems to be alive with her energy. Always billowing or slightly aloft in iconic fashion. This is complimented by Ruth Redmond’s colors, which shift nimbly from bright, hopeful blue skies to tense, red conflict to sickly green alien holding cells.

Also, Monica Rambeau! In a backup titled ‘Homecoming’ with art and story by Maria Frohlich and colors by Brittany Peer, Monica fights a sentient cloud, (no, not the Marvel character Cloud of the Defenders, a second, different sentient cloud). This is experienced in a flashback as she cooks a meal and talks to her dad on the phone. The food is lovingly rendered and Monica’s hair is fantastic both in and out of costume. Both Monica and Carol have been “Captain Marvel” but their hair games are also incredible and they the artists deserve credit for making that the case.

Captain Marvel: Assault on Eden #1 is a fun one-shot before Carol’s next ongoing adventures kick off. It’s always nice to spend some time with fan favorites Hulkling and Wiccan and everyone is treated well by Oliveira’s deft hand.

Cute kids, scary computer
Great use of narration
Incredible hair
Fun Monica Rambeau backup
Getting Billy and Teddy's story in crumbs through other character's books and mobile exclusive infinity comics is getting old. They deserve more space.
