‘Universal Monsters: Frankenstein’ coming August 2024

Dr. Henry Frankenstein begins his unholy quest to create life by robbing the grave of a decorated police officer to find necessary parts, specifically a strong pair of hands.

Skybound has revealed the next Universal Monsters series, centered on Frankenstein in a four-issue series by Michael Walsh. The new series will launch on August 28th, 2024, and joins Dracula, which just wrapped up, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon, which launches in April.

“The story of Dr. Frankenstein and his poor, misunderstood monster is one of the most recognizable and influential horror tales ever told… It’s also one of my favorites,” said creator Michael Walsh. “The original 1931 film from Universal Pictures is a continuing inspiration for my art and storytelling, so, as you can imagine, I was honored to be able to play in that sandbox. Trying to tell an original story while staying true to the canon of that film was an exciting yet daunting prospect. It’s been some of the most fun I’ve had making comic books, and I know that fans of Frankenstein and horror will have a blast experiencing these characters and iconic scenes like never before.”

So what’s Universal Monsters: Frankenstein about?

In this first issue, Dr. Henry Frankenstein begins his unholy quest to create life by robbing the grave of a decorated police officer to find necessary parts, specifically a strong pair of hands. But little does he know that the corpse has a son who is mourning a father – and that this young boy will forever change Frankenstein’s life.

“Michael Walsh’s take on Frankenstein feels like a comic book classic in the making,” said Alex Antone, Editorial Director at Skybound. “While each issue stands alone as its own vignette, in a way that only he can, Michael has brilliantly sewn together a brand-new perspective which both lovingly adapts the Universal Pictures film and breathes new life into one of the most important horror stories of all-time.”

This collaboration between Skybound and Universal is the latest milestone in a near decade long relationship that encompasses film, video games, and now comic book publishing. Universal Monsters: Frankenstein is the third Universal Monsters series launch, following James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds’ Dracula and Ram V, Dan Watters, and Matthew Roberts’ Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives!, arriving in stores this April.

Frankenstein will be followed by more new limited series pairing the biggest names in comics with pop culture’s most iconic monsters.

Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #1 (of 4) (Lunar Code Coming Soon | SRP: $4.99) will be available at comic book shops and digital platforms including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.
