‘Dragon Ball’ creator Akira Toriyama passes away at 68

Akira Toriyama passed away on March 1st.

Bird Studio has shared the sad news that manga creator Akira Toriyama passed away at the age of 68. The creator of such works as Dragon Ball, Chrono Trigger, Blue Dragon, and Dragon Quest was revealed via the official Twitter of the Dragon Ball X account. He had passed away on March 1st of a acute subdural hematoma.

In a letter posted on March 8th by Bird Studio, it was revealed that Toriyama had several works in the middle of their creation. It was also revealed that future plans for a commemorative gathering were not yet decided.

Dragon Ball is one of the most successful manga ever published, with 42 collected tankōbon volumes created with over 160 million copies sold in Japan and 260 million copies sold worldwide. The series lives on on multiple platforms, including a new video game, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero which was announced in December 2023.
