While IDW tried to focus on the frights today at NYCC, their panel opened with a quip about the much-maligned logo. “That’s gonna be how it is for some time,” director of marketing and moderator Aub Driver said.
Announcements then kicked off, with the biggest being the reveal of IDW’s new horror imprint, IDW Dark. After the success of Beneath the Trees, IDW wanted to explore more ways of telling terrifying horror stories, leading them to create their brand-new imprint.
“Horror is in our blood,” said editor Maggie Howell. It’ll feature the sequel series 30 Days of Night Falling Sun and Beneath The Trees Rite of Spring. Creator Patrick Horvath discussed how Rite of Spring will explore the impact of the first book on its characters. He pictures it as being set in the 90s and mentions how the onset of the internet would be a factor, like armchair investigators trying to solve crimes on message boards. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles writer Jason Aaron was in attendance at the panel and commented that he read Beneath the Trees just last week, and “images from it have been haunting me ever since.”
Just like with most of its books, licensed properties will be a large part of IDW Dark. The company will be expanding its relationship with Paramount; the announced properties were Smile, The Twilight Zone, Event Horizon, A Quiet Place, and Sleepy Hollow, which Howell said, “I don’t want to pick a favorite, but this might be mine.” No release windows or plot details were announced.
More Godzilla comics were the other major reveal from IDW’s panel. Godzilla Heist was announced for February. It’s about a man who figures out how to lure Godzilla from city to city. Like a top-tier opportunist, he then robs banks while Godzilla rains down chaos.
Mothra: Queen of the Monsters was up next. “She does die two pages in, so that is an issue they’ll have to deal with,” said editor Jake Williams. She’s killed by Antra, a new Kaiju created by IDW and the killer of Mothra. Expect it to launch in March.
Lastly, Godzilla vs America was revealed. The anthology series will follow Godzilla, rampaging a destructive path across America. “Guys, we’re screwed!” said Williams. Each issue will feature a creative team from the city that Godzilla is terrorizing, with New York and Chicago facing the Kaiju’s wrath first.
