Viewer beware, Goosebumps: The Vanishing’s cast and crew shared a stage to discuss the new mysteries to come this upcoming season. Moderated by TV Guide’s Damian Holbrook, stars David Schwimmer, Ana Ortiz, Sam McCarthy, Jayden Bartels, Elijah Cooper, Galilea La Salvia, Francesca Noel, Stony Blyden, and executive producers Hilary Winston and Rob Letterman enthralled viewers in a discussion about adapting these spooky stories.
The first clip shown, introducing dad Anthony, twins Devin and Cece, takes place literally in Anthony’s “mom’s basement.” Schwimmer described what is in that basement as a “dark… secret… problem?” in an effort not to spoil anything in front of his bosses. There are all sorts of plants that Anthony the botanist is experimenting, which I’m sure won’t cause any issues down the road. The panelists jokingly assured the audience that every effort was taken to make sure no plants were harmed.

The next clip that was “directed the hell out of” by Letterman, according to Winston, and featured all the teenage characters. The scare at the end of the clip literally caused Ortiz to jump out of her chair.
The final clip of the panel was definitely the most intense and featured only Schwimmer’s Anthony. Holbrook issued a trigger warning for anyone who didn’t like pimple popping videos, and he was right. According to Schwimmer, it is not even the weirdest scene he filmed for the series. The odder practical effects were “hard to talk about” in fear of spoiling the later plot points, according to Letterman. However, he revealed there will be a later episode in the found footage and directed by Blair Witch creator, Eduardo Sánchez.

Inspirations for this season includes Stay Out Of The Basement, The Haunted Car, Monster Blood, The Girl Who Cried Monster, The Ghost Next Door and Welcome to Camp Nightmare
Additional teases for this season included Winston and Letterman discussing a scene of “Jayden running through actual subway cars.” Winston describes the humor of the series as deriving from the teenagers getting caught up in their own drama in the middle of horror stories.
With one season already in the books, Goosebumps has proven they can successfully modernize these ’90s classics – even if they have to start from scratch this season. “Punchlines and scares are similar,” which is good because this season will have plenty of both, Winston said. You’re in for a scare when Goosebumps: The Vanishing streams January 10th on Disney+ and Hulu.
