The competition was heating up on Top Chef. Not only did the Last Chance Kitchen winner return, but the contestants were informed that the semifinals are next week. The series will be in Calgary, Alberta. But, there were still a few days left in Toronto.
Despite the host city, this week’s episode was dedicated to Montreal. When the chefs entered the kitchen, it was rearranged to look like a Dépanneur. The quickfire required the competitors to make a dish with ingredients only found in the Montreal equivalent to a convenience store. Punkie Johnson served as guest judge. The actress and comedian is known for cooking in her dressing room so the challenge wanted to mimic that environment. Hotlines and knife rolls were off limits and only electrical equipment could be used to cook. At stake was a cool $10,000 and a small advantage in the following challenge.
The elimination highlighted sustainability. Montreal is home to one of the largest urban agricultural programs in the world where produce is grown in rooftop gardens. The contestants were tasked with making a dish using the Montreal sustainable rooftop ingredients along with any of the leftovers in the Top Chef pantry. The dish must also transport the diners into one of the seasons of the year. The quickfire winner could select their season first. Everyone else drew knives from the remaining seasons.
There were some real shakeups in this week’s Power Rankings. Take a look at where everyone stands following week 10.
