Judging by the Cover

Judging by the Cover – 06/11/25 new releases

Colin shares his favorite covers from this week’s new comics.

There is a veritable cornucopia of new comics hitting stands each week. While readers often know exactly what it is they’re most interested in (those in the know have got their pull-list sitting in their comic shop’s ever-reliable hands), there is something to be said about going against that old truism and Judging a Book by Its Cover.

Some truly astounding cover art hits each and every week, and these are the ones that caught Colin’s eye the week of June 11th, 2025.

Absolute Batman #9

Variant by Dan Hipp

Judging by the Cover – 06/11/25 new releases

Big, bulky Bruce looks down in the dumps. I’m going to take it as canon that there is a chocolate bar in the Absolute universe named ‘Absolute Vengeance’. The multiverse is a weird place, after all; maybe the major point of divergence between this and the main DC Universe is that Hershey or Nestle had a real goth brand identity crisis. And here we are.

Batman and Robin #22

Variant by Javier Fernández

Judging by the Cover – 06/11/25 new releases

Show of hands for anyone as excited by an Etrigan appearance as I am. Big or small (and in this Fernández cover, big is an operative descriptor), I’m eager for any role for Kirby’s rhyming demon. I need to catch up on twenty or so issues of the book to enjoy this one, but know that it’s a journey I’ve been meaning to take for some time, and this brutal cover makes the journey all the easier to begin.

Blood Type #1

Variant by Albert Monteys

Judging by the Cover – 06/11/25 new releases

This Monteys cover is a delightful recreation of the cover of 1953’s MAD #3. I had a great set of reprints of those first handful of Mad comics, and I used to pore over every panel. It’s a delight to see this modernized, the batboy made all the more ravenous. This begs the question: will the new EC find a place for comedy cartooning (even though MAD is currently owned by DC)?

Death of the Silver Surfer #1

Cover by Dike Ruan

Judging by the Cover – 06/11/25 new releases

This is a startlingly stark image of the Surfer, his board turned into a red line of demarcation between (presumably) life and death. It’s a yin-yang of an image, and it’s a brilliant touch that the highlights against the Surfer’s skin slowly meld into that white field. He’s as iconic a visual character as one can get, turned metaphysical.

One World Under Doom #5

Variant by R. B. Silva

Judging by the Cover – 06/11/25 new releases

Magically devastated skeleton Doom looks like he could have stepped off of a death metal album cover here, and I’m all for it. The Dormammu debacle has left some gruesome damage, and Silva draws attention to the eeriness of it here, when we didn’t get as good a glimpse of it last issue.

Runaways #1

Cover by Stephanie Hans

Judging by the Cover – 06/11/25 new releases

Another album cover image: the Runaways here could very well be an up-and-coming post-punk act (if there weren’t already an actual-punk act who beat them to the name). Stephanie Hans captures a casual cool, here, that might undersell any actual hijinks to be glimpsed inside.

Supergirl #2

Variant by David Talaski

Judging by the Cover – 06/11/25 new releases

This feels like Rockwellian celebration of American iconography, but it does beg the question: did those children just watch Kara change into her superhero outfit? That seems to be breaking some sort of superhero code.

Transformers #21

Variant by Simon Parr

Judging by the Cover – 06/11/25 new releases

For collectors of Transformers action figures there is always the internal debate of whether to display the figure on your shelf in robot mode or vehicle mode? This cover answers the question: maybe both? Starscream looks streamlined and menacing in both modes; a more emblematic jet is hard to find in modern comics fiction.
