Dark Horse Manga is continuing its acclaimed English-language releases of manga master Gou Tanabe’s H.P. Lovecraft adaptations, and just in time for Halloween. Tanabe, fresh off his 2025 Bram Stoker Award win and a string of Eisner, Harvey, and American Manga Award nominations, is back with a new take on Lovecraft’s The Shadow out of Time.
This latest volume is adapted into English by Zack Davisson (read our interview with him), best known for translating the Eisner-winning Showa: A History of Japan by Shigeru Mizuki. Lettering is by Eisner-nominated Steve Dutro.
In The Shadow out of Time, we follow Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee, a professor at Miskatonic University, whose life takes a chilling turn in 1908 when he collapses mid-lecture after witnessing a surreal, alien vision. When he regains consciousness, something about him is… different. He starts speaking in strange ways, obsessing over time, faraway places, and ancient knowledge. His transformation unnerves everyone around him, from colleagues to his own family.
Five years later, the real Peaslee resurfaces with no memory of his bizarre behavior. His quest to understand what happened sends him on a globe-spanning investigation into a forgotten civilization that still casts a long, terrifying shadow across time itself.
