After learning more about the Absolute Rogues, it’s time to focus on Wally again. But, wait, what about that crazy cliffhanger?! Well, be patient, true believer – try to slow down for a second. Why? Because Wally is robbing a gas station! What?! Anyway, go read for yourself to find out why Jeff Lemire and Travis Moore team up here to deliver an action-packed issue full of surprises readers won’t want to miss.
Much like prior issues, Absolute Flash #7 zooms by. Once again, like other issues, its accelerated pacing is one of the strongest points here. This issue moves at the speed of light due to its quick twists, turns, and an overall captivating plot. It’s the perfect example of a true “page-turner” because of how impossible it is to put down. While the consequences of Eleanor Thawne capturing Rudy West are unfolding, Wally is in a bit of a pickle. Because of how much he’s used his powers, his Absolute metabolism begins to kick into third gear and illustrates how taxing these powers are. As a result, the issue reinforces how troubling Wally’s life is without any mentor. On face value, meeting Wally in real life would be an immediate concern, particularly given his status as a starving runaway. However, Lemire pushes things into third gear when he decides to flip things on their head by having Wally’s saving grace be someone completely opposite to who one might expect. Through these twists and turns, I found this issue to be very enjoyable re-imagination of what defines Wally West and where his values lie.

Travis Moore has completely floored me in this issue. While I haven’t always found Moore’s art to be the most compelling, as I discussed in his Nightwing Annual, I was left speechless in this issue. Moore does an incredible job here, adding intricate line work that adds immense detail to scenes. In an issue full of weather-based disasters, I found that the line work that Moore incorporated helped the story to feel more gritty intensifying moments of suspense. In addition, Adriano Lucas once again continues to up his game with this issue showing the layers of shading and colors complement one another. Throughout the story, Lucas’s colors helped bring this story to life by making the issue far more animated. Altogether, this is a spectacularly illustrated issue from cover to cover.

What makes Absolute Flash so compelling? I think this issue exemplifies the reasons so well. The series has given The Flash a breath of fresh air for those who have felt the main series has become a little convoluted. Here, Lemire continues to take the familiar and flip it on its head by taking the familiar and turning it into something very unexpected. Through these surprises, the story feels unpredictable in the best way possible. Rather than expecting things to play out the way we’re used to, Absolute Flash continues to be an exciting series that leaves readers on the edges of their seats wondering what’ll happen next. Issue #7 reminds readers not to get too comfortable with things because as soon as we might think we’ve figured it out, Jeff Lemire is here to tell us that things are just getting started. This is a very fun story that is full of drama and ends with an intriguing cliffhanger.
