The fate of Orbana will be decided in the final season of the animated series WondLa. On one side you have the remnants of the human race and on the other are the aliens who colonized the planet while the humans went underground. In the middle of the conflict is Eva Nine who feels a close connection to both worlds. She and her friends search for a way to bring peace to both groups.
Recently, we spoke with WondLa stars Jeanine Mason and Gary Anthony Williams who play Eva Nine and Rovender Kitt respectively. Both spoke about season three as well as their and their characters’ journey throughout the show.
Eva Nine and Eva Eight’s relationship continues to be complicated. Though they are sisters, they have separate views on how to save Orbona. Mason shared her views on the pair’s differences coming out.
“Yeah, I think it’s honest to a lot of sibling relationships, and certainly relationships in general for people,” she said. “So, I love that we get to, instead of depicting something cheery and superficial, we get to be honest here. I think it’s common to have disagreements and differing opinions. I’m proud of how there is still so much love in the midst of all that, and seeing them trying to navigate it is something I’m grateful we’re giving our viewers to maybe help understand something they might be experiencing in their own lives.”
A more compelling and positive relationship on WondLa is the found familial bond between Rovender and Eva Nine. Williams explained why he thought the two characters were able to connect so well.
“He’s a great tracker, and she is someone on a journey,” he said. “There is a lot of similarities in there which would explain a lot of the head butting at the beginning when someone is so much like you, that it annoys you. I think now looking back, that is a really important part of their relationship. There’s a kindred spirit in there. He’s older than her, he’s a father figure, but they both kind of have that searching, journey kind of spirit.”
Mason is fond of both the characters as well as her co-star. She said, “Oh my god, I’m a sucker for an odd couple and I love a curmudgeon just in my normal life as well. So this was kind of a dream relationship to build and to develop with Gary. He’s such a talented actor and his voice just carries so much of that, you know, experience and pain that we now know Rovee carries. Through season two we learn so much of his backstory. I’m just so grateful to build their love story. This has been the life pillar for me, this relationship.”
It’s no surprise that one of Williams’s most memorable parts from the entirety of WondLa involves Rovender and Eva Nine in the last season. “There’s a moment in this where they reunite and Eva has changed, that I can’t really talk about but we’ll see. That’s a beautiful moment for me them coming back together because he couldn’t take another loss without completely depleting himself. The whole journey, truly which this thing is, was just an absolute joy.”
Season three truly is an epic conclusion to the series. Mason talked about what she is most excited for viewers to see. “I think the visuals are going to blow everybody’s mind like they normally do,” she said. “The depth, but this is heightened even more the scale of some of these. Then I think they will be happy with where it lands. I hope they will be happy with it. I think this is very much prime for people to walk away. Just a way thinking fondly of these characters. I hope it lands in a place, it is always a sweet spot, for them to return to.”
