Exclusive: First look at Hela confronting Knull in preview for ‘Queen in Black: Hela’ #1

Marvel’s latest cosmic mystery begins with Hela walking across the void itself to face the sleeping God of the Void.

Marvel is set to peel back the curtain on one of the most intriguing corners of its current cosmic mythology this July with Queen in Black: Hela #1, and AIPT can exclusively reveal an unlettered preview from the issue.

Written as a key chapter in the ongoing Queen in Black saga, the debut issue promises answers to some of the biggest questions surrounding Hela’s rise and her connection to Knull, the God of the Void.

According to Marvel’s solicitation, readers will finally learn why Hela and Tyr were stranded in Midgard when the Rainbow Bridge fell, how Hela managed to imprison Knull, and which version of Thor attempted to stop her. The story also follows Balder the Brave as he seeks answers from Karnilla of the Norns, though surviving the truth may prove just as dangerous as uncovering it.

The preview pages offer a striking glimpse into that mystery.

The sequence features Knull seemingly adrift in the darkness of space, asleep or perhaps trapped within some kind of dreamlike state. As the pages progress, Hela approaches him across the cosmic void itself. In a visually arresting touch, her footsteps leave impressions across space as though she is walking on solid ground.

Whether the sequence is taking place in a dream, a memory, or some supernatural realm remains unclear, but the imagery quickly escalates as Hela confronts the sleeping god directly. By the end of the preview, the Queen of Hel is shown seizing Knull by the throat, asserting her dominance over one of Marvel’s most feared cosmic entities.

Artist Pasqual Ferry leans heavily into the surreal nature of the encounter. The pages feel mythic in scale, using vast stretches of darkness and silence to emphasize the gulf between the two characters before bringing them violently together. The result is a preview that raises more questions than it answers, particularly regarding how Hela was ever able to cage a being as powerful as Knull in the first place.

Those answers arrive next month when Marvel finally reveals the hidden history behind the Queen in Black.

Queen in Black: Hela #1 goes on sale July 22, 2026.
