Deadpool #22 Review

Deadpool has seen better days, but really isn’t that typical for him? This issue opens with Deadpool near death… is it good?

So what’s it about? The full summary and preview is on our very site!

Why does this book matter?

Gerry Duggan has been killing it in Uncanny Avengers, so why not more hilarious Deadpool dialogue in his own book? Artist Matteo Lolli keeps the art sharp and comedic, so it’s definitely worth giving a chance.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Deadpool #22 Review
Ew.

When you step back and look at the overall scope of this issue it’s a great success. It opens with Deadpool dead and ends with, well, I’ll say no more to avoid spoilers. Let’s just say more are dead. Along the way there’s a funny heist, a reminder of what Cap did to Deadpool, and a touching moment with Preston and her family. It’s hard not to feel like you got your money’s worth by the end.

That’s partly because of the hilarious song Deadpool comes up with while in a Spider-Man costume. Duggan will make you laugh more than once with this comic, and really, what more can you ask for from a Deadpool comic? The issue also has a Christmas feel which is a nice touch (and Deadpool even has Frosty and Santa spar) and that only enhances the feels of the moment.

The art by Matteo Lolli is detailed and solid when selling the comedic scenes. There’s a slower pace to the issue due to the layouts, but they’re no less competent. Without a doubt, Lolli gets comedic timing. There isn’t enough respect for artists who can accomplish this, but when Deadpool is funny by simply leaning over and throwing away a Spider-Man costume in a trash bin you know the art is working.

It can’t be perfect can it?

This is a slower paced story, that’s for certain, which does leave the reader wishing there was more. Though the overall story is sound it does lack something when it comes to plot progression.

Double ew.

Is It Good?

Funny, emotional, and tied to Deadpool personally, this is an issue that feels solid. It’s short, but works well on multiple levels.
