Hugh Jackman on the Disney/Fox deal: Will he return as Wolverine in the MCU?

“I was like, ‘hang on!'”

It’s no secret that Disney has been aggressively pursuing a deal to acquire 20th Century Fox, and the first thing that pops into any comic book fan’s mind upon hearing the news is the possibility of the X-Men and Fantastic Four being able to reunite with the Avengers and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Hugh Jackman, who iconically embodied the role of Wolverine in Fox’s X-Men throughout the 2000s, has never been shy about his wish to see Wolverine and the rest of the X-Men fraternize with the characters of the MCU. And tragically, just as he retires the mantle of Wolverine, it appears to finally be a possibility. In a recent interview with Collider, Jackman had the following to say:

It’s interesting because for the whole 17 years I kept thinking that would be so great, like I would love to see, particularly, Iron Man and the Hulk and Wolverine together. And every time I saw an Avengers movie I could just see Wolverine in the middle of all of them like punching them all on the head. But it was like, “Oh well, that’s not gonna happen,” and it was interesting just when I first saw that headline — it was just the possibility of it and who knows what’s gonna happen, obviously — I was like, “Hang on!” But I think, unfortunately, the ship has sailed for me, but for someone else I would like to see Wolverine in there.

Unfortunately, it appears that the deal will be too late for Jackman to reprise his role. But who knows? Time (and money) changes everything.
