It’s the battle we’ve all been waiting for for three issues now and it all comes down to this: Jocasta Nu vs. Darth Vader, which may sound like a one sided battle, but how often does Vader have to fight against an angry Jedi with a lightsaber rifle? We thought not!
So what’s it about?
Read our exclusive preview to find out more.
Why does this matter?
Nu and her library of Jedi facts are at stake here, which could mean character development for Luke and future Jedis, or the Empire getting stronger. This is also the finale that will be setting up future story arcs. Believe us when we say Charles Soule is laying down some great groundwork.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
It’s not often you see Darth Vader jump.
The tricky thing about action scenes is you can’t forget danger should always be imminent and stakes should always be made clear. Soule and artist Giuseppe Camuncoli do that and more. You’re going to want to read every panel closely as it’s clear every action is important in this chess match of a battle. Nu is obviously in way over her head but the rifle she loaded with a lightsaber last issue gives her an edge that keeps her one step ahead of Darth Vader. It’s stories like this that make you wish there were more Jedi in the universe because Vader vs. anything less isn’t as interesting.
This issue sets up a new wrinkle between Darth Vader and the Emperor on top of the whereabouts of the mysterious Jedi records Nu and her compatriots saved. By the end of the issue, you’ll not only have a new layer to add to the already complicated relationship between the Emperor and Darth Vader, but also a promise for more stories because of that and what Nu left behind.
Giuseppe Camuncoli draws a great issue which is starting to sound like a no-brainer statement. You have to give him credit for all the detail he puts into backgrounds and ships which look functional and realistic. There’s an interesting TIE-fighter style soldier carrier that is pretty dang cool and Nu’s rifle is quite something. Let’s see more of this rifle in comics Marvel because if it catches on a replica of that will look quite nice on a wall. The action is of course easy to follow and exciting too.
That is one sexy looking rifle.
It can’t be perfect can it?
I don’t want to give anything away, but Nu’s exit in this story is quite abrupt. It reads like the creators forgot how many pages they had left and had to get to the next scene. Since she is basically a main character that’s rather disappointing.
Is It Good?
An excellent ending that’s all action with great moments that’ll have fans cheering. The real trick of this issue is how it gets you excited for more even though that’s secondary to the action.
