WWE 2K19: 2K announces new Towers mode, reveals purchasable loot crates and outdated models

The more things change, the more things stay the same.

2K Sports’ WWE 2K series seems to get the short end of the stick compared to the rest of their sports games offerings. The game has been running on largely the same engine for years, and some animations can even be traced back to the SmackDown vs. Raw series of the PS2 era. A recent interview revealed the publisher was hoping to “step up investment” in the series, but what exactly that means remains to be seen.

In the mean time, 2K today announced a new game mode that will make it in the upcoming installment of the series, called “Towers.” The concept is simple: face off against a series of opponents loosely based around a theme, gauntlet style, to reap rewards. Hopefully it will be the kind of simple yet addictive gameplay the game needs to remain playable after players burn out on Universe mode.

Towers mode will feature different match stipulations (the press release mentions Steel Cage, Tables, Submission, Iron Man, and Falls Count Anywhere), and features a “Legends Lore” feature that “highlights the history and accomplishments of all the undeniable WWE Legends featured in WWE 2K19.

Unfortunately, revealed in the screenshots accompanying this announcement is purchasable loot crates, the bane of gamers’ existence, especially in a game like WWE 2K which usually progresses at a snail’s pace without the help of cold, hard cash.

Also worrying is the apparent re-use of now-outdated models, such as Daniel Bryan’s pre-retirement, long hair look:

Hopefully this is just an outdated screenshot and not reflective of the version of D-Bry we’ll get in the final game, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
