Team USA and Team Canada have advanced to the Overwatch World Cup playoffs at BlizzCon.
Both teams put forth very impressive performances at the Los Angeles qualifiers this weekend. USA finished with a perfect match record of 5-0 and dropped only two maps throughout all five matches. Canada finished with a match record of 4-0 and prior to facing Team USA, didn’t lose a single map. The headline match between the two teams saw Team USA walking away with the victory 3-1, which secures them the top seed going into the finals at BlizzCon.
The results from this weekend’s Los Angeles qualifier:
- 1st USA
- 2nd Canada
- 3rd Brazil
- 4th Norway
- 5th Austria
- 6th Switzerland
With their win in Los Angeles, Team USA and Team Canada join South Korea and Finland as the four teams that have qualified for the playoffs.
The first round of qualifying matches were held in Icheon, South Korea and saw South Korea and Finland walk away with the top two positions respectively. South Korea’s win was expected as they’re the current favorite to take home the cup for the third year running. Their roster is compromised of mostly New York Excelsior players, but we won’t see the US-based team’s players going up against Team USA in the quarterfinals, as both teams are currently top seeds.
The next round of qualifying matches will take place in Bangkok, Thailand this weekend Sep. 14-16 and feature teams China, Australia, Sweden, Thailand, Spain and Denmark. Overwatch World Cup’s final qualifying matches will be held in Paris, France through Sep. 21-23 and feature teams United Kingdom, Poland, Italy, Germany, Netherlands and France.
Each round of qualifying matches will see the top two teams move on to the playoffs with the final 8 teams competing at BlizzCon, held in Anaheim, California Nov. 2-3
