Orion Pictures has released the first photo of the new Chucky from director Lars Klevberg’s (Polaroid) Child’s Play remake.
Tyler Burton Smith is the writer behind the screenplay for the reboot of the original Child’s Play film that was released in 1988. The initial film grew into a franchise, spawning six sequels, comic books, a video game, and an upcoming television show.
In the original 1988 film, Charles Lee Ray, a serial killer, is fatally injured and transfers his soul into the body of a Good Guy doll. A widower gifts the doll to her young son, who has no idea his new toy is possessed by the spirit of a murderer.
Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Rec) and Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) are headlining the reboot. Production began this week in Vancouver and the screenplay is said to be based heavily off of the source material.
The synopsis for the film reads, “A mother gives her son a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its sinister nature.” The plot has been reported to feature a group of kids, similar to Stranger Things, and a modern-day hi-tech version of the Good Guy Doll.
The original Child’s Play was created by Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner, both of whom are currently working on making more Child’s Play films, as well as a TV series. MGM’s remake of Child’s Play will essentially be a competing property, as Mancini and Kirschner are not involved in the reboot in any capacity.
A release date for the film has yet to be announced.
