Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”
In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Media & Content Manager Dave Brooke and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Batman/The Maxx: Arkham Dreams #1

I’ve always been a big Sam Kieth fan so it’s great news to see IDW is printing a Maxx/Batman crossover series this week. Even cooler is seeing Jim Lee’s take on Maxx which frames the two heroes very nicely.

And then I want to follow that up with Kieth’s cover for the book. I love the little details he puts into his work and you can tell he’s using conventional materials.
Border Town #2

This monster cover comes at the perfect time for the Halloween season. Ramon instills a sense of fun as these two characters crack up, and the use of color is incredible. I’m also a sucker for ruffled clothing like on this cover as it looks lived-in and more realistic.
Batman #56

Mattina’s work here is vivid and incredibly lifelike due to the lighting and color. It also has the added benefit of being realistic so that the surreal and creepy eyes are even more striking.
Eric’s Picks:
Nightwing #50

I dig Jonboy Meyers’s style in general, and it’s an especially good fit for Nightwing. There’s a sense of both fluidity and strength here that matches Dick’s status as a gymnast and acrobat. Add in the telltale lights of Blüdhaven and this is an all-around solid take on the character.
The Dreaming #2

I love Jae Lee’s work. It’s both detailed and ethereal, and both the inks and colors here are gorgeous–the contrast between them especially so. The characters’ expressions here are also great, from the pumpkin-head’s smile to the other man’s open-mouthed stare in the corner. Add in the wacky mask and this is a great image on all fronts.
Shatterstar #1
Cover art by Yasmine Putri
I loved seeing Yasmine Putri’s work back when she regularly did variants for Nightwing, so it’s great to see more of her stuff again. The highlights and fog are both very cool here, and making Shatty’s blades the focal point is a great decision. This is a cool cover that makes me want to check out the series.
