Remember all that hubbub about superhero movies getting pigeonholed into a new Oscars Academy Award category called “Popular Films”? It appears the Golden Globes are taking that award and rubbing the Oscars nose in it as they have nominated Black Panther for best drama at the upcoming Golden Globes awards. Black Panther was widely talked about in regards to the “Popular Films” category, but appears at the Golden Globes it’s more than worthy of a best film nomination.
Black Panther is up against some quality pictures including BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, If Beale Street Could Talk, and A Star Is Born. One could argue it’s the most different of the pack with much of the other nominations based on real life, or at the very least very serious pictures. The Golden Globes are noticably different than the Oscars in that they also have a musical and comedy category, although it’s obvious Black Panther doesn’t fit that category.
This is a good sign for Marvel, Ryan Coogler and Kevin Feige as superhero movies get a little more respect in the cinematic universe. Not since Dark Knight and Heath Ledger’s posthumous Oscar win as the Joker have superhero movies been up for such prestige. One has to wonder if this will open the door for more superhero film recognition.
That’s not all, as Black Panther was also nominated for Best Original Score and best original song, too. Considering superhero films tend to do poorly at award shows it might make more sense for it to win in this category, although it is up against Isle of Dogs, First Man, A Quiet Place, and Mary Poppins Returns. It does have some star power behind it since Black Panther was composed by Ludwig Göransson, who did the music for Creed one and two and Venom.
This isn’t the first nomination for Black Panther as Chadwick Boseman won Best Actor in a Movie and Best Hero at the MTV movies awards back in June.
Will you be rooting for Black Panther this year, and heck, will this make you want to watch the Golden Globes even more?
The Golden Globes air on January 6, 2019, 8:00 PM EST.
