Why the running length of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ isn’t a big deal

Time is a valuable commodity.

Time is a valuable commodity. Anyone who has ever attended a pointless conference or been trapped in an endless conversation can attest to this. But what if that time is spent doing something you like? And what if that amount of time is relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of things? When the rumors were confirmed Avengers: Endgame would be three hours and two minutes some people lost their minds. Initially, it seemed like it was way too much time for a movie. Eager fans almost immediately accepted it, but the fact remains three hours is a long time. To help put things in perspective here is a list of some things that can been done in three hours.

Watch a movie

Why the running length of 'Avengers: Endgame' isn't a big deal

Endgame is far from the first movie to have a three hour run time. At the turn of the century, Peter Jackson’s epic Lord of the Rings trilogy all clocked in at around three hours. Not only did fans of the series not complain, they bragged about watching the almost four hour long special editions. The Wolf of Wall Street, Titanic, and Schindler’s List all are over three hours long, performed well at the box office, and are loved by fans. There are not many people who say, “The Green Mile would have been so much better if they took off around half an hour.” Three hours in a movie theater is a long time, but it can also be worth it.

Binge watch television

Why the running length of 'Avengers: Endgame' isn't a big deal

The increase in popularity of streaming services has led to more binge watching of seasons. Why spend months waiting for the biggest moments on your favorite television show when you can see everything in a weekend? There are obvious differences; you are in the comfort of your own home and can pause the movie at your leisure, for example.

Of course, watching a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie on the big screen and binge watching The Office again aren’t exactly the same thing. Taking your time and watching every episode of your favorite television show at your leisure is an amazing luxury. It also does not compare to being in the theater the first night to watch the most anticipated movie of the year.

Watch 1/3 of WrestleMania 35

Why the running length of 'Avengers: Endgame' isn't a big deal

Three hours is nothing for a wrestling fan. The addition of pre shows and the lack of time constraints from having a show on Pay Per View has led to ridiculously long cards. Last year’s WrestleMania was around seven hours, including the pre show. This year’s edition felt even longer. Three hours of watching Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is a breeze after watching history’s geekiest wrestlers.

Watch 83% of Avengers: Infinity War

Why the running length of 'Avengers: Endgame' isn't a big deal

The MCU has been down this road before. Just last year, Infinity War clocked in at two hours and forty minuets. Another twenty-two minuets is the equivalent of a network sitcom. Plus, movies in the MCU go quickly. How many of us left Infinity War realizing it was over two and a half hours? Marvel movies move at a brisk pace that make time irrelevant. The final installment of this story should be no different resulting in the quickest three hours of our lives.
