Movies to look forward to in July

Here are the most anticipated movies of July.

June 30, 2019

Summer has kicked into high gear and theaters around the country are filling up with would be blockbusters and students taking a break. The next entry from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the next horror movie from A24, and the next movie from Quentin Tarantino will all be released nationwide in the next few weeks. Here are the movies that AiPT! is looking forward to.

July 2nd

Spider-Man: Far From Home (Nationwide): Technically, this is the final movie of the Third Phase. Realistically, this is the start of something new in the MCU. Tom Holland has already proven to be a great Peter Parker and the trailers have been teasing something fantastic. Will audiences learn where the MCU is headed next or will we just have to settle for another great MCU movie?

July 3rd

Midsommar (Limited): Director Ari Aster has described his follow up to 2018’s Hereditary as “The Wizard of Oz for perverts“. Whatever that means, the movies looks confusing and frightening. Aster’s debut gave audiences a good Satanic cult movie similar to Rosemary’s Baby. His second movies looks like an homage to 1973’s The Wicker Man.

July 11th

The Art of Self-Defense (Limited): There was a time when Jesse Eisenberg was at the top of the movie world. With his roles in Adventureland, Zombieland, and The Social Network, his ticket looked to be punched. He has spent less time in the public eye, but he keeps busy. This dark comedy about a man who takes up self defense courses after being mugged looks like it could be a summer stand out.

July 12th

Crawl (Nationwide): Sam Raimi is one of the most respected genre directors of all time. From the original Evil Dead series to the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy, Raimi has thrilled movie audiences for decade. His latest picture looks to be a good old fashioned monster movie. There is a lot of high budget movies coming in July and this looks like a great counter.

Stuber (Nationwide): The teaming of Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani sounds great. The premise of an Uber driver being thrown into a world he knows nothing about after picking up a police officer has potential, even if the story is familiar. For whatever reason, the trailers have become less funny over time. This seems doomed to be forgotten.

July 19th

The Lion King (Nationwide): Disney always struggles to make money. Luckily, along with Far From Home the live adaptation of The Lion King also releases in July. The 1994 animated original is a classic that defined a generation. This live action remake will probably do just as well.

July 26th

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Nationwide): Quentin Tarantino movies always generate buzz and this one is no different. With an all star cast and a story that involves the infamous Manson murders that brought an end to the 1960s, the film is one of the most anticipated of the year. Tarantino’s movies tend to live up to the hype and there is a lot here.

Brahms: The Boy II (Nationwide): The weirdest trends will occasionally pop up in Hollywood. This year it seems to be possessed dolls. Chucky, Annabelle, Woody will be joined by Brahms from The Boy. The 2016 did no received the warmest critical reception, but movies like this rarely do. Audiences did not seem to care much either so this sequel is surprising.
