Todd Phillips’ take on Joker presents DC Comics’ most iconic villain in the form of Arthur Fleck, a mentally ill failed stand-up comedian who is slowly going insane, and in the death throws of his mind’s sanity, begins to bring crime and chaos to Gotham City in 1981. The film is part of Warner Bros. initiative to launch “DC Black,” a series of standalone films designed to de-emphasize any connection to a shared DC Extended Universe.
Leading the cast is Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker. To prepare for the role Phoenix lost 52 pounds and based his laugh on people suffering from pathological laughter — a trademark the Joker and his victims are known for.
Joining Phoenix on the cast is Robert De Niro as Murray Franklin, Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, Frances Conroy as Penny Fleck, Brett Cullen as Thomas Wayne, Douglas Hodge as Alfred Pennyworth, and Dante Pereira-Olson as a young Bruce Wayne.
Joker will premiere at the 76th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2019, and is scheduled to be released in North America on October 4, 2019.
