Team USA sweeps China to win 2019 Overwatch World Cup

Let’s hear it for BlizzCon’s hometown heroes.

For the first time in Overwatch’s history team United States has won the Overwatch World Cup. The hometown heroes swept China in the finals of the 2019 Overwatch World Cup on Saturday night in Anaheim, California at BlizzCon.

Team USA becomes the first team in history to take down team South Korea and the first team other than South Korea to win the gold medal in the four-year history of the event.

Only their journey to the gold Team USA was very nearly perfect, taking down the three-time champs South Korea, and winning 18 of the 19 maps played.

See the moment they defeated Team China for the gold below:

Team USA’s roster features some of the best players from around the Overwatch League:

  • DPS: Corey Nigra (Washington Justice)
  • DPS: Jay “Sinatraa” Won (San Francisco Shock)
  • DPS: Kyle “KSF” Frandanisa (Los Angeles Valiant)
  • Main tank: Matthew “Super” DeLisi (San Francisco Shock)
  • Off-tank: Indy “SPACE” Halpern (Los Angeles Gladiators)
  • Main support: Grant “Moth” Espe (San Francisco Shock)
  • Flex support: Shane “Rawkus” Flaherty (Houston Outlaws)

The American team enacted sweet revenge against the defending champions, by completely and utterly dominating them in a 4-0 showing. During the match USA only dropped one map to South Korea, their only loss of the entire event.

Once the top three teams were awarded their medals, Jay “Sinatraa” Won, was awarded the T-Mobile MVP award. The winner of the award is voted on by the audience watching on Twitch. Sinatraa is garnering quite the collection for himself, having won the Overwatch League Season 2 MVP award.

“It means the world to me obviously,” Sinatraa said. “But I definitely have to give it up to my team. Without them I would literally be nothing. I think Corey should have got MVP personally. Big shoutout to Corey who popped off, but yeah, I’m just happy.”

Congratulations to Team USA for bringing home the gold.
