WWE invaded the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon Sunday night to put on their latest ppv event, NXT TakeOver: Portland. As with the TakeOver events that have come before it, Portland’s card was absolutely stacked and the crowd was red hot.
It was quite the night for the black and gold brand, with all four championship titles on the line.
Adam Cole stood on the precipice, with Tommaso Ciampa trying to push him off the edge to reclaim that which he never really lost, the NXT Championship. Cole survived thanks to an unexpected hand reaching out to help–Johnny Gargano–a man that betrayed his DIY partner by slamming the championship title into Ciampa’s shocked face.
Keith Lee barely survived his epic battle with Dominik Dijakovic in a match that blew the roof off the building and has social media in an absolute frenzy. Zero question this bout has landed on MOTY (match-of-the-year) lists across the wrestling fandom. It sure as hell landed on mine.
The BroserWeights have been an unexpected delight since their inception. A rare lightning in a bottle team for WWE that I don’t think anyone expected to be half as entertaining as they are. It’s likely that their ability to quickly get so hugely over with the crowd helped influence the results we witnessed last night – NEW NXT TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS! Both teams put on a highly entertaining match that has undoubtedly left fans thirsty to see where this feud goes next.
Tegan Nox and Dakota Kai had a tall order on their hands in following the instant classic that was Keith Lee vs. Dominik Dijakovic, but you wouldn’t know it from watching these women burst out of the gate as if Hell itself were on their heels. You could practically taste the venom being spat between these two as they beat the absolute trash out of each other. Leading up to the finish it looked to be one of the top matches of the night, but the unexpected arrival of Raquel Gonzalez to assist Kai left a lot of folks scratching their heads.
It could be argued that Johnny Gargano had an excuse to do what he did to Tommaso Ciampa. Heck, I’d probably be pissed too if Finn Bálor beat clean and then wiped his crotch sweat off and rubbed it in my face while sitting on my chest (yes that really happened). Balor and Gargano started slow with a lot of mat wrestling, but as the pace started to pick up the match really took off. These are two of the best in-ring performers on the WWE roster and this match put that on display last night. By beating Gargano clean, Balor has cemented himself as one of the top heels and overall competitors in NXT.
