‘WWE 2K Battlegrounds’ will replace ‘WWE 2K21’ this fall

The arcade-style game promises ‘social pick-up-and-play fun’.

WWE 2K21 won’t be happening this year following the loss of former developer Yukes and near universally negative reception for last year’s WWE 2K20. However, a WWE-branded video game will be coming out this year from 2K Sports, in the form of WWE 2K Battlegrounds. According to 2K, Battlegrounds is an arcade-style action game with “over-the-top Superstar designs, environments and moves.”

WWE 2K Battlegrounds is being developed by Saber Interactive, who also develops the NBA Playgrounds series. The trailer, seen above, shows several big-name wrestlers like The Rock, John Cena, Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair doing battle in unconventional locales like swamps, rendered to have more cartoonish and less realistic appearances. Fans of NBA Playgrounds will know what they’re getting themselves into here. 2K says the game will focus on “social pick-up-and-play fun, but with plenty of depth for those who want to get way into it.”

While there will be no entry in 2K’s beleaguered wrestling simulation series this year, the series isn’t totally gone, and will return in 2021.
