Sega announces Game Gear Micro, palm-sized console

What is this, a Game Gear for ants?

Sega is celebrating its 60th anniversary with the newly announced Sega Game Gear Micro, a revival of its popular ’90s handheld console with a miniaturized retro twist.

At this time the Game Gear Micro is only available to preorder in Japan where it will release on October 6, 2020, and there’s no word on whether or not a Western release will eventually be coming.

The Game Gear Micro comes in four different colors: black, blue, yellow, and red, and each color variation has four games included that are unique to that color.

When Sega says micro, they mean micro. The console is 80 mm wide (about 3.15 inches) and 43 mm tall (about 1.7 inches), and the screen measures in at just 1.15 inches diagonally, which is about a third of the size of the original Game Gear’s screen.

The console will retail in Japan for 4,980 yen, which roughly equates to about $46. A collectors package is available as well, this includes all four colors of the Game Gear Micro and a big window micro lens that mounts to the console, making it much easier to see the screen.

Here’s a preview of the four Game Gear Micro color variations and the games included with each one:
