AIPT Comics Podcast Episode 75: Our favorite comics by Black creators

We recap the news, look to next week, and highlight some of our favorite comics by Black creators.

This week, guest co-host Nick Nafpliotis joins David Brooke to discuss the biggest news of the week, look ahead to next week releases, and we devote our main segment to our favorite comics from Black creators.

Before we get into the show notes, it needs to be said AIPT Comics Podcast unequivocally supports the efforts of the Black Lives Matter movement and stands against racism, white supremacy, and police brutality narrowly in the comics space and through all other global avenues.

Some funds you can donate to include:

Black Visions Collective
George Floyd Memorial Fund
David McAtee Memorial Fund
Justice for Breonna Taylor Fund
Act Blue Bail, Mutual Aid, and Racial Justice Organization
Reclaim the Block
Homeless Black Trans Women Fund
Black Mental Health Alliance

At the top of our show, we discuss the news and how comic book artists came out to support Black Lives Matter with commissions and Gail Simone launching #ComicWritersChallenge to help raise funds for Black Lives Matters. Marvel Comics (along with Disney) and DC/Warner Bros. expressed support for the Black community, as well as Marvel donating 5 million to charities and causes. Nick also did some digging around Marvel’s comments on the use of the Punisher logo.

Somewhat harrowing is the news that the Man-Bat series is the latest DC title to b canceled due to COVID-19, we break down the 2020 Eisner Awards nominations with some surprises, and finally, in some Earth-shattering news, DC Comics has cut ties with Diamond Comics Distributors and instead is going with Lunar Distribution and UCS Comics Distributors. Comic shop owners react and they are not happy.
