Thor by Donny Cates and Nic Klein has been the very definition of epic and awesome revealing a powered up Thor as Galactus’ new herald. The two have teamed up to stop The Black Winter, a threat that nearly killed Galactus at the start of this story arc. We’ve learned The Black Winter is a force that destroyed Galactus’ universe back before the Devourer of Worlds was known as Galan. This force also showed up in Silver Surfer – Black #4. In the latest issue out today, Thor #5 reveals a little bit more about The Black Winter and it’s a game-changer.
Late in the issue, Thor calls out The Black Winter after fending him off when it took the form of Thor’s worst enemies.

The ever-changing black smoke reveals itself and it looks a lot like a dark version of Thor!

But wait, it gets even more interesting. As the force of evil barks back and forth with Thor, we soon learn the relationship this thing had with Galactus. There’s a good reason for why he wants to kill Galactus and it’s a doozy of a reveal…

Marvel Comics
That’s right, Galactus was once a Herald himself! Not only does this shift how we perceive Galactus, but it reveals he was once like Silver Surfer in his own universe zipping along and doing the bidding of The Black Winter. This may suggest Galactus took part in destroying his own universe and also makes him less superior than we thought. One might also argue if Galactus is this powerful and just a Herald how powerful is The Black Winter?
We’ll likely find out all that and more in the concluding chapter of Thor #6 which is set for release August 2020. That’s only a fraction of the story though and I highly recommend you read the entirety of Thor #5 to understand its story.
