‘Captain Marvel’ #28 opens up an exciting new chapter for Carol Danvers

Captain Marvel #28 is another solid issue in a strong series.

Captain Marvel has been one of the most consistently good titles on shelves, and with Captain Marvel #28, Kelly Thompson and Jacopo Camagni introduce another strong installment in the series.

When it was first announced that Carol would be learning magic, even the most stalwart defenders of this run wondered just how that would happen. After all, magic isn’t something that seamlessly fits into Carol’s lore, nor is it something that her stories ever really require. Captain Marvel #28 provides the reasoning for this story and manages to make the plot make sense while giving it an incredible twist ending.

Thompson effortlessly grasps the dynamic of the Jess and Carol friendship and per usual, their interactions are a highlight. Thompson’s humorous writing is perfect for these two characters — and Jessica’s reaction to Carol’s hook-up with Stephen was priceless.

Carol’s venture into the magical world is interesting, even if her relationship with Stephen itself is a bit odd. The saving grace of it all is knowing that Carol/Stephen doesn’t seem to be something Thompson is playing up as a serious thing, rather than Carol rebounding with a safe person. It’s noncommittal even if they both care about each other as friends. Through their interactions, Thompson is able to delve into Carol’s psyche a little, exploring what makes her tick. The magic scenes with Carol are interesting for that reason — and her costume is actually really cool.

Stephen’s refusal for Carol opens the door for a really fun signature Thompson brand panel of speedrun interactions — this time with a bunch of magical users telling Carol they won’t teach her either. It’s a fun panel, especially for fans of the different magic users in the Marvel universe.

The Ove arc was one of the strongest in the title thus far, so it’s good to have this villain played up, seeing Carol venture to new territory in order to defeat him. It’s interesting to see her push herself to these limits both in her personal life with her commitment issues in the Rhodey plot, and professionally with learning magic to take down Ove.

One thing this Captain Marvel run has made clear is that Thompson is a master at the ending twist, and the one in this issue is just palpable. Seeing Amora pop up is exciting, creating some juicy drama due to her connection to Ove and what Carol plans to do with the magic she learns from her.

Captain Marvel #28 is another solid issue in a strong series, featuring good art and great writing. While magic doesn’t seem like something that will be sticking around for Carol very long, it sure seems like a fun ride for now.
