The dynamic comic book duo of writer Erik Burnham and artist Dan Schoening take a break from their epic Ghostbusters crossovers to deliver IDW’s Godzilla: Monsters & Protectors #1. It’s an awesome new series that follows “MeToob” vlogger Cedric Nishimura as he recounts his tale of how he saved the world, and how Godzilla played a role in it. A corporation named Linival creates a new form of clean energy that they deem “safe” without doing all the necessary testing and research. As a result, they end up waking up the King of Monsters, and that’s when the real fun begins.

Burnham gives the book a unique YouTube-like feel as the whole thing is told from the perspective of Cedric Nishimura’s videos. The writing keeps the reader informed, entertained and focused the entire time. The dialogue is funny and well-paced within each amount of panels per page. You can tell from just the first issue that this is going to be a fun series to read.
Schoening supplies some larger-than-life illustrations that help make the story feel big — as it should be, given this is a story about a legendary giant lizard. His imagery gives readers a great first impression and balance of humor, action and carnage they can expect from the issues to follow. It’s a treat to watch the character designs and environments that Schoening brings to life no matter what pop culture icon he’s involved with.
Godzilla: Monsters & Protectors #1 is a fun read and a great companion to the recent Godzilla vs. Kong movie. Burnham and Schoening have proved in previous projects that they can bring their inventive ideas to such a popular character like Godzilla.
