X-Factor has changed a lot over the years, but X-Men Legends #3 is a refreshing reminder of the team at its barest bones, giving old school X-Men fans a chance to re-indulge in this world long gone.
Louise Simonson has always been a fun writer — she’s not afraid to dive into the weird aspects of comic books, and that’s often why her writing is just such a blast to read. X-Men Legends #3 is fun both in how Simonson handles her characters and for its wackier comic book-y type elements. Without spoiling too much, Apocalypse just has conversations with Cameron Hodge’s decapitated head — it’s great.
Aside from Simonson’s ability to make comics campy and fun, her original X-Factor run was always filled with great character moments that explored the original five X-Men’s characters. X-Men Legends #3 is so seamless, it’s almost like she never left the title at all — she still knows these characters so well. Like the other books in the Legends line, the joy of this comic comes in its nostalgia, and this one is full of great, nostalgic moments.
Walter Simonson’s pencils have aged like fine wine, only getting better with time passing. The pages look beautiful, and it might be some of his best work.
X-Men Legends #3 spends a lot of its pages in battle sequences, which for spoilers’ sake, I won’t get into. Many pages are spent on this “chaos”, but it’s never a bad thing since Louise’s dialogue hits the nail on the head while Simonson’s pencils make every page look beautiful. All in all, it’s a fun ride filled with nostalgic beats and it sets up an interesting fourth issue for fans of the original X-Factor series.
