DC Comics lets ‘Superman ‘78’ #1 preview fly

Fly into director Richard Donner’s Superman once more in Superman ’78!

Press Release

DC Comics’ Superman ’78 #1 is headed to comic book shops on August 24th and to wet our whistles they’ve released a full preview. The series aims to tell new stories from the beloved film property by writer Rob Venditti (Hawkman) and artist Wilfredo Torres (Batman ’66). Originally announced in February as a digital-first series it will now appear digitally and in print the same day.

“There’s no fictional character that I love more than SUPERMAN,” says Torres, “and of all the many interpretations of the big guy in Comics, Animation, TV and Film, the Christopher Reeve/Richard Donner version is the one I love the most. Working on this project is very literally a childhood dream come true.”

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

“My earliest memory interacting with the DC universe is seeing Christopher Reeve fly across the screen,” says Venditti. “While others might say that the John Byrne era is their Superman, or the Dan Jurgens era is their Superman, Reeve is mine. Superman is and has always been my favorite superhero, but Superman ’78 is a project I never dreamed of working on because it didn’t seem possible it could ever exist. This is the gig of a lifetime.”

Check out the preview below.

Fly into director Richard Donner’s Superman once more in Superman ’78! Written by Robert Venditti (Superman: Man of Tomorrow) and drawn by Wilfredo Torres (Batman ’66), Superman ’78 tells a brand-new adventure in the world of the beloved film. A bright, shining day in Metropolis is interrupted by a mysterious drone that crash-lands in the city and starts wreaking havoc. This looks like a job for Superman! Beginning this fall, decades after Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve’s Superman: The Movie introduced generations of fans to a silver screen version of DC’s Man of Steel, DC returns to this beloved property to tell new stories set within this world with the publication of Superman ’78 by writer Rob Venditti (Hawkman) and artist Wilfredo Torres (Batman ’66)!

In this first look preview, Superman ‘78 #1 begins with all the classic elements of Superman: The Movie on full display. Check it out, and then scroll through for more information about this new comic book series launching in print and digitally on August 24!

In Superman ’78, bystanders are surprised and delighted by Superman’s abilities, and Lois Lane doesn’t (yet!) know that Clark Kent is secretly Superman. The sheer thrill of seeing a man fly, leap, or stop a bullet will be reflected in this environment where Superman has just been introduced! Inspired by Donner’s classic, timeless style of superhero storytelling, in Superman ’78 Venditti and Torres will remind fans that a man can truly fly.

Superman ‘78 #1 by Rob Venditti, Wilfredo Torres, Jordie Bellaire and Dave Lanphear arrives on August 24 with a cover by Torres, plus variant covers by Evan “Doc” Shaner (open to order) and Torres (1:25).

Similar to his Batman ‘89 #1 variant cover that homages Jim Lee’s iconic Batman artwork, Mico Suayan’s Superman ’78 #1 variant cover for Big Time Collectibles captures the spirit of ’78 with an homage to Jim Lee’s Superman artwork:

In order to save Metropolis, Superman must surrender to Brainiac or watch his city burn to the ground! After being taken aboard Brainiac’s ship, Superman finds a shocking piece of his past that changes his entire future! Meanwhile, Lois Lane gets a cryptic message from a mysterious source claiming to have a  way to save the Man of Steel!
