Jurnee Smollett and Misha Green to reunite for ‘Black Canary’ film

Jurnee Smollett will reprise her role as Black Canary in a ‘Birds of Prey’ spinoff film penned by Misha Green.

While many of us are still justifiably ticked about HBO canceling Lovecraft Country, they may have somewhat redeemed themselves. On Friday, the Hollywood Reporter confirmed recent rumors that Misha Green will be writing a Birds of Prey spinoff movie with Jurnee Smollett reprising her role as the Black Canary.

Misha Green took to Twitter to confirm the news along with a bunch of emojis that I’m still feverishly attempting to decode (hoping that last one means Green Arrow will be involved).

As if that weren’t cool enough, Jurnee Smollett began retweeting news and excited fan reactions about the film. She also expressed her own overwhelming joy at having the support of Birds of Prey writer Gail Simone.

You’re likely to find a wide array of opinions of the Birds of Prey film, but even its detractors will generally agree that Smollett was fantastic as Dinah Lance. After seeing how incredible she was in Lovecraft Country, it’ll be all types of exciting to see what she does with the character in a lead role.

Add in one of the best genre writers you could possibly ask for in Misha Green, and this is by far the most I’ve been excited for a DC film project. Let’s hope HBO took note of the two Suicide Squad films and gives Green the creative freedom to make this a great movie.
