On Friday, Diamond revealed a new MCU Doctor Strange figure for their 7″ scale Marvel Select toyline. The figure looks nearly identical to the 2016 release, but comes in “all-new movie packaging,” whatever that means.
Sadly, Diamond did not show the “all-new movie packaging” in their announcement, but at least we got some pictures of the figure sans most of the accessories.
All snark aside, this release will presumably include all the same stuff the first one did: Two sets of alternate hands, spellcasting effects, and a beautiful display base. It will retail for $29.99 and is available now for preorder with an expected arrival in September.
Now if you’ll indulge me for a bit, let’s return to the snark and discuss Marvel Legends’ recent price hike. In case you need a visual reminder of how bad it’s gotten, check out this depressing Instagram post from Rektangular.
You can cite all the inflation numbers and supply chain issues you want, but that’s completely absurd — especially the 20th Anniversary Toad figure retailing for $33.99.
Meanwhile, Diamond Select is over here selling an even larger piece of plastic (Marvel Legends are 6″ scale while Marvel Select are 7″) with the same number of accessories and full diorama base for $4 less. I still think both figures are overpriced, but it’s becoming more and more difficult to believe that Hasbro’s pricing strategy isn’t just a continual test to see where the ceiling is.
