F. Scott Fitzgerald’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ gets comics adaptation ‘Gatsby’

AWA Studios is launching the new classic adaptation ‘Gatsby’ this November.

Press Release

AWA Studios has announced they’ll publish an adaptation of the great American novel The Great Gatsby this November called Gatsby. The reimagining of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby will take an LGBTQIA-led, racially diverse lens from writer Jeremy Holt and artist Felipe Cunha with colors by Dearbhla Kelly. The 8-issue original series kicks off its first issue on November 2nd in comic book shops.

“Like many readers around the world, I fell in love with F Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby as soon as I read it,” said series creator and writer, Jeremy Holt. “Fitzgerald’s writing inspired me to create my own version of this iconic story, but I wanted to make sure I included themes from my own life and experiences and make it relatable for younger audiences that are unfamiliar with this story. There aren’t nearly enough queer and multicultural narratives portrayed in entertainment, so I was really focused on crafting a story centered on proper and authentic representation.”

So what’s Gatsby about?

Set in the present day, GATSBY is a wholly reimagined version of The Great Gatsby. While the main characters and plot points are familiar to the original novel, Holt’s rendition will be viewed in a new light, recontextualized for the technology, societal norms, and economic striving of the 2020’s as opposed to the 1920’s through teenaged character leads. Though set nearly 100 years in the future, the themes of betrayal, power, greed, and the American Dream ring as true now in GATSBY as they did in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age tale.

“Jeremy Holt is a rising star and fantastic writer, with their bold voice eloquently and authentically speaking to the experiences of Gen Z,” said Axel Alonso, Chief Creative Officer of AWA Studios. “As one of the most widely read books of the past century, we knew it was important to honor the spirit of The Great Gatsby with this reimagined version, and I couldn’t be happier with what Jeremy was able to bring to the table. By setting GATSBY in the modern day with a diverse cast, they put the original book’s themes into a context that I’m confident will connect with a new audience.”

August 19, 2022 – New York, NY – AWA Studios, the independent developer of bold and relevant stories from the world’s most outstanding artists, writers, and artisans, announced today the release of GATSBY, a reimagining of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby through an LGBTQIA-led, racially diverse lens, debuting on November 2. From creator and writer Jeremy Holt (MADE IN KOREA, VIRTUALLY YOURS) and artist Felipe Cunha (AVENGERS, RETURN TO WHISPER), the new 8-issue original series reinvents the widely read Great American Novel for a new generation of readers.

GATSBY is an LGBTQIA-led, racially diverse series that reimagines F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, set in present-day Long Island. This story turns forward the clock to feature teenage versions of all of the key characters and views the classic dichotomies of the novel through a distinctly 21st century lens that includes the Internet, social media addiction, dark web bootlegging, and the proliferation of online identity creation, deletion, and theft. When middle-class Singaporean student Lu Zhao is invited to spend a summer on Long Island with his rich cousin Tommy, before attending Columbia University in the fall, his assimilation into the opulent American lifestyle straps him into a collision course fueled by designer drugs, sex, deceit, and murder.

GATSBY is created and written by Jeremy Holt, illustrated by Felipe Cunha, colored by Dearbhla Kelly (SORT OF SUPER, HUMAN REMAINS), and lettered by Adam Wollet (HANGMAN, UNBOUND). Issue #1 will be available November 2, both digitally and in stores wherever comic books are sold, with the following seven issues available on a monthly basis.
