The moment we’ve all been waiting for (dreading?) is finally here: Nintendo just presented a Nintendo Direct based entirely on the upcoming Mario Bros. movie, which now officially has the catchy title of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”. Watch the trailer below:
The Direct kicked off with Shigeru Miyamoto, greeting the New York Comic Con crowd and introducing Illumination’s Chris Meledandri, who said his crew is “filled with Mario fanatics” and they would be completing animation for the movie next week. He said they’ve been working hand-in-hand with Nintendo composer Koji Kondo to incorporate authentic music into the game.
Next up, we took a look at some of the cast: Chris Pratt (Mario) and Jack Black (Bowser), who both called it an honor to be part of the movie.
After that, we finally got our first real look at the movie. The trailer opens with Bowser being introduced to a legion of Koopas in front of the gate of an ice palace guarded by a gaggle of penguins that looked straight out of Super Mario 64. Bowser finds a Super Star and asks who’s going to stop him now.
Cut to Mario, who does not have an Italian accent at all – if anything, a slight New York Accent. After all that hype, his voice sounds…fine?
After the trailer, Miyamoto thanked everyone watching and said we’ll see him again next spring.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is scheduled to hit theaters on April 7, 2023.
