‘X-Terminators’ #2 is in-your-face fun

X-Terminators is a rude, loud series, and we’re all better for it.

If you’re a fan of fun that’s loud and proud of it, you’ll likely dig X-Terminators. The new miniseries from Leah Williams and Carlos Gomez came onto the scene with a great first issue, and X-Terminators #2 is out today. Expect content warnings, lots of blood, and some dirty jokes thrown in too. It’s simply not the kind of content you typically get from superhero comics these days.

X-Terminators #2 opens on a content advisory warning which serves as a data page, a bit of a joke, and an actual warning. The story immediately catches us up with a fun “Previously on” caption and then picks up where we left off as Wolverine looks to dice up our heroes. Thankfully, Jubilee, Boom-Boom, and Dazzler aren’t in danger, as Laura was just in berserker mode, more or less.

So begins another fun and exciting chapter in a grindhouse action frenzy comic series. What’s exciting about this issue is how it plays with expectations. A smash cut to the Quiet Council shows the characters after all the vampire business is over, immediately changing the tone. Then another smash cut later, and the characters are getting booed as if they were the entertainment for the night. It’s as if Williams is saying, “Yes, they are the entertainment, and they need to kick it up a notch!”

This issue also develops the “why” of the heroes’ situation, further showing Dazzler has terrible choices in men. Along the way, Jubilee has a little fun being the center of attention, evoking WWE, a new threat is introduced involving magic, and Wolverine gets ticked off when she finds out this entire situation is because of Dazzler’s choice in men.

Gomez brings a great sense of style and scene direction with the visuals. The clothes are tattered, and the sexuality is in your face on purpose, further cementing the more adult nature of this series. The blood splatter and general brightness of the visuals are done well by Bryan Valenza. This issue is fun from the word go, and the visuals show it from page to page.

Aside from Wolverine being added to the group, the plot doesn’t thicken so much as add new threats. That goes for the cliffhanger, which should a fun ride next issue. This isn’t a thinker of a comic, nor is it delving into the psyches of these characters. Instead, it’s having a good time showing off these characters’ loud and proud personalities.

One misstep might be a second data page, which gives readers info they most likely know already about each of the heroes. Serving as a dossier for the Vampire Nation, it doesn’t add much beyond its existence. Maybe it’s a clue that Dracula will arrive eventually, but it’s mostly unnecessary.

X-Terminators is an unabashed, rude, and loud series, and we’re all better for it. This second issue continues to be super fun, funny, and entertaining. There’s simply nothing like it on the comics shelves, making it well worth purchasing and enjoying. That uniqueness, however lacking in depth, goes a long way to entertain comics readers who are bored with the same old same old.
