Four Samosas is a heist movie, comedy, and love story all rolled into one. The plot follows would-be rapper Vinny (Venk Potula, Veep) who has just found out his ex-girlfriend Rina (Summer Bishil, The Magicians) has gotten engaged. Vinny teams with a group of friends to disrupt the wedding by stealing Rina’s dowry diamonds from her father’s grocery store.
There is a Wes Anderson vibe that lasts throughout the movie. This is seen through the vibrant colors and editing along with the whimsical feel. “There is a warmth in that type of storytelling,” writer-director Ravi Kapoor told AIPT. “But it’s interesting; I think the film is a lot warmer than I intended it to be. I think that has a lot to do with casting Venk.”
Potula is definitely one of the highlights. Along with being able to drop some decent bars, he is charismatic. He is flawed character that audiences will want to see learn. Vinny is funny and rash, but also realizes he needs the help of his friends to get things done. He is a relatable character that is easy to root for. “Emotionally, I put a lot of myself into Vinny,” Ptula said.
As with any heist story, characters are a big part of Four Samosas. The difference here is there is a charm that resonates the entire time. Much of this is due to the effortless chemistry. “A lot of times we would talk about how everyone was just there,” Potula said. “Even during lunch when we were not in character it was as if the soul of the character was with the actor.”
The strong use of characters along with the well written story adds up to an entertaining film. Four Samosas brings together a number of familiar elements and tells a story that is all its own. Its smooth pace and oddball characters add to the all around heartwarming atmosphere. It is a feel good movie that will catch viewers off guard with how fun and honest it is.
Four Samosas opens from IFC Films in theaters and on demand December 2
