It’s sad news today for Superman fans, especially those who enjoyed Henry Cavill in the role. The actor, who just last October was reportedly in talks to return as Superman, reported via his Instagram that’s no longer the case.
Cavill posted a message with simple white text on a black background. No fluff or pomp, just the facts.
In the message, which you can read below, Cavill said:
“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. Respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”
Cavill went on to say:
“For those who have been by my side through the years….we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember….Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”
The road to get to this point was a tumultuous one, to say the least. In 2018, Cavill went through contract negotiation troubles, and while he did make an appearance in Black Adam, the new direction for the DCU is ever-changing.
Given James Gunn and Peter Safran were named the heads of the DCU just two months ago, the future still looks bright. It just doesn’t have Cavill in its plans going forward.
Gunn took to Twitter around the same time saying new details are coming in early 2023.
Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.

The question then is…who will take over as Superman? Gunn has made it clear Superman is a key part of their plans after all. He’s even writing the next Superman movie.
