On Sunday, Borys Kit of the Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that Donald Glover will produce and star in a film featuring the Hypno Hustler, an obscure (but totally awesome) Spider-Man villain. The movie will be a Sony Pictures production with a script written by Myles Murphy, Eddie Murphy’s son.
If you’re reading this site — or any pop culture journal— then it’s a safe bet that you’re familiar with Donald Glover’s work. Following his beloved portrayal of Troy Barnes on Community, Glover went on to win well-deserved Emmys for writing and acting in his acclaimed series, Atlanta (to go along with his Emmy awards as a writer on 30 Rock).
Glover has also won five Grammy awards for the music he created as Childish Gambino and starred in numerous comedy stand-up comedy specials.
Back when Community was on the air, fans clamored for him to be cast as Peter Parker — a role that ultimately went to Andrew Garfield. He eventually appeared as Aaron Parker (aka The Prowler) in the Tom Holland Spidey films, but this new project will obviously be much different.
The Hypno-Hustler is a supervillain who can hypnotize his audience with the aid of his guitar and backup band, the Mercy Killers. In case the bio didn’t tip you off, the character was conceived and created in the 1970s.
He’s been used sparingly since then, but his obscure bizarre powerset has made Hypno Hustler an ironic favorite with Spidey fans. According to Kit’s report, Glover was drawn to the character due to his music-based powers and Murphy’s story pitch, which has thus far not been revealed.
Now that the project has been informally announced, it shouldn’t be long until casting and script information starts to leak, as well.
