Welcome to the February’s first Fantastic Five! (Say that five times fast.) This is AIPT’s weekly column where we celebrate the best comics of the week. This week, we have an exciting Batman #1, the latest in a great licensed property, and two stellar entries in Marvel series, but the #1 spot is claimed by a new property over on Dark Horse. Let’s get right to the books!
#5: Batman: Legends of Gotham #1
Fans of Red Hood, Bane, or recent DC continuity can’t miss Batman: Legends of Gotham. Diggle has a great handle on the voice of these characters while the plot connects to recent stories and develops new ones in the process.

#4: Star Trek #4
Star Trek #4 continues to show the creative team, and IDW fundamentally understands this series to perfection. This series feels like a lost episode of the show that deserves, nay, should, be filmed so audiences outside of comics fans can enjoy it. It’s just that good.

#3: Scarlet Witch #2
Williams has a great track record of telling fun fan-made stories with Storm and I’m thrilled every time she gets to play in the Marvel Universe. Wanda’s solo series continues to explore her connections to the Marvel Universe.

#2: Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #9
Lanzing and Kelly also ease the worries of Bucky fans, setting up a plot that promises some espionage action from the Winter Soldier. Carmen Carnero has knocked it out of the park all 10 issues, and in this one, she cements Sentinel of Liberty as some of her best work yet. The action scenes perfectly portray the grandiosity of the moment and even her panel layout is inspired. From top to bottom, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #9 is a gorgeous book with lots of care poured into every inch of it.

#1: Where Monsters Lie #1
Where Monsters Lie #1 is the kind of comic you’ll be fully invested in by the end, wishing to learn more about its colorful characters. A unique approach to horror and killers, it’s funny, weird, and wholly original.
