‘Deadpool’ #5 review

It’s a symbiote-eat-symbiote world.

In Deadpool #5, Alyssa Wong, Martin Coccolo, and Neeraj Menon bring the first arc of this X-Men adjacent ongoing to somewhat of a close. It’s more of a comma than a period, as there are plenty of loose ends, but Valentine and Deadpool escape from Harrower and Doc Ock. Deadpool is also no longer actively being eaten alive from the inside.

SPOILERS AHEAD for Deadpool #5!

The prior issue’s final page splash reveals that Harrower had been using Deadpool to regrow Cletus Kasady. In the best joke of the issue, it is promptly undone when the symbiote chomps down on his freshly hatched body three pages into the issue.

The art continues to serve the story well and effectively conveys just how charged the brief moment between Harrower and Kasady was for those characters. Also, the antlered smoke guy (The Horner Emperor) who heads The Atelier is cool as hell.

The symbiote, now tragically named “Princess” as Deadpool fears Stephanie Meyer’s lawyers more than the horrors he experiences on a day-to-day basis, has taken the form of a Big Red Dog. While she will always be Rensmee in my heart, this animal companion is a welcome development and Wade deserves a nice, loyal, durable friend as Valentine may not be all that they appear!

Deadpool #5
Ms. Emily Elizabeth has some experience with big red dogs.

Moving forward from this initial conflict, it looks like the Atelier will be taking a more direct role in dealing with Deadpool and Valentine. Descending into the world of Marvel’s assassins as new dog dad Deadpool enters his John Wick era is an enticing pitch for what’s to come.
